The Colosseum is an oval amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy. It was constructed between AD 72 and AD 80 with further modifications in subsequent years. The Colosseum was estimated to hold between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators and was commonly used for gladiatorial contests, public spectacles and executions.

The Colosseum and other monuments of antiquity around the archaeological sites of Rome were designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1980 and extended in 1990 to other extraterritorial properties and archaeological areas.
