The Great Wall of China was initially built as a fortification system for the Chinese states and empires across the historical northern borders of China. It's a combination of several walls, watch towers and fortresses, some built as early as the 7th century BC and is one of the world's largest military defense structures.
The Great Wall of China was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
