The Taj Mahal is an ivory-white marble mausoleum located in the Indian city of Agra. The mausoleum was built by the order of the fifth Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan between 1631 and 1648 to house the tomb of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The mosque, the guest house and the outer gardens were added later and completed in AD 1653.

The Taj Mahal is considered to be the greatest architectural achievement in the whole span of Indo-Islamic architecture and was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
